"Wrapping and the body”

“Wrapping and the body” is an investigation about Why we wrap ourselves ? What are the functions of wrapping? Is it necessary to wrap?

Normally we use the word “wrapping” for an object : we wrapped a gift, we wrapped a letter, a product, a thing. But when wrapping + the body, the body would be materialized. The body is like an object that could be wrapped. Wrapping also plays an important role in our consumptive-society. The comsuption reflects our personal tastes, social status and inner emotions, however, the esthetic sensibilities and the psychological effect of wrapping are made by people through the way it's been wrapped. There are also visiable wrapping (exterior, color, form, materials) and invisible wrapping (the fame, the psychological effect.) People wrap their body (like cloth) to obtain the warmth, to hind their bodies and sometimes to protect themselves.

Cocoon

The cocoon has been made for the case if people get cold when they sit on the chair, so the body and the chair would be wrapped together. When the body and the chair has been wrapped as one, it gives out a mysterious feeling. The viewer may see a cocoon, but they have no idea what is inside, then it remains a mystery for the viewers. it's the same as wrapping a gift, it's not only protecting the contents but also presenting it to the receivers in a mysterious way.

In my work “Cocoon” I choose the direction of creating the warm textiles because the cocoon should be warm and comfortable. Therefore, I tried to make real warm textiles with different materials and techniques. It's also very important for me to make the viewers experencing the warmth of textiles with their eyes. When they see the textiles, they know immediately it gives the warmth. Cocoon is based on the idea of “wrapping and body".
